Difficult Scriptures. Philippians 4: 11 - 13
“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,”
The words of Paul in his letter to the Philippian Church, in other words I don’t complain or moan about anything, I count it all joy, he goes on to say.
“whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”
I just can’t imagine being so content that there would be no complaints or
grumbling, even when I’ve not voiced things I often still think it. Are
we to take these verses at face value, was Paul being honest? or is it possible
to achieve that level of trust in God. After all even Jesus got angry with
the money lenders in the temple.
Can we as Christians hope to reach that level of contentment or is it out
of our reach, I think a clue to the answer lies in the phrase “I have learned
to be content whatever the circumstances” it didn't just happen over night, having been through many trials
over the years and experienced God’s faithfulness he had
learnt that “all things work for the good of those who are in Christ Jesus”
Instead of complaining at his lot, a contented man is thankful that his condition and circumstances are no worse than they are. Instead of greedily desiring something more than the supply of his present need, he rejoices that God still cares for him. Such a person is content with such as he has. Arthur W. Pink.
So there you have it, just remember it could be worse, give thanks, and be content that it’s not.
